"History???" The Martial Truth Podcast #65 Michael Calandra
History? The history of Karate and Kobudo is rife with mistakes. Legend is taken as fact. Sources for information are not cited. Who to believe. I choose to believe the real researchers doing real historical research. People like Patrick McCarthy, Andreas Quast, Thomas Feldmann, amongst several others. Relax, don't get so upset if the history doesn't go your way. Have fun with it. Remember the physical training in these arts is what really matters.

Recently I shared an article translated by Andreas Quast from the book Okinawa Karate Kobudo Jiten (Okinawa Karate and Kobudo Encyclopedia), by Shigeru Takamiyagi, published 2008. The article states that Tatsuo Shimabuku studied with Miyagi Chojun for 3 years before he founded Goju-Ryu. It's quite possible that the version we do of Seiunchin Kata is the way Miyagi Sensei was teaching it at that...

    If and when you do use swords for play(?), where practicing blocks and such, how common is it to break? Then to break in the middle? All and everyone can answer where I’ve heard several break in the middle, usually! I’m just wanting more input on the commonality of breaking, where they break?

    Koshi no Mawari means 'circle the hips', right? That name sounds like it means it has a direct relationship with the JuJutsu techniques. Does that mean that the sword work of Sosuishi-Ryu shows the same kind of relationship with the empty hand techniques in the same way that the Jian of Practical Method has the similar body mechanics as the empty hand form? Do you know what I'm trying to say?

    I used to Senpai for Sensei for many years from a white belt at 15.. (Man, did Shoshin Nagamine make a huge stink about that lol. I had to be graded by the NA head of the Org. Ended up costing me my x2 grading and later, my black belt..) I taught the kids classes and assisted with the adult class for 3 and a half years.. Sensei made me his Senpai on day 1 after setting me to Sai and Bo forms for about 10 minutes. I loved every minute of it. Then, a family member that used to attack me all the time released my anger one day during an attack. Sufficed to say, I almost killed him with my talent. I hit him so many times I gave him a massive concussion and he couldn't stand for a week without vomiting. Having to come to terms with it, I quit teaching as Senpai and moved away when I had finally realized that Matsubayashi Ryu was in fact one of the most lethal forms of Okinawan Karate. I am still glad I learned it and that I was lucky enough to find a Sensei that taught Traditional.

    I can see how what you describe applies in the kind of leverage power that it appears to me practical method specializes in as well as using the waist to generate power. I can also see how it prevents one from loosing one's center and thereby loosing one's balance and one's power. The concept applied during the step itself doesn't seem to apply to some other kinds of power seen in some other internal and external martial arts- especially ones that rely on using body weight and momentum to generate power- for example a lot of yi zhong baguazhang, at least from the little my understanding is of the limited amount that I learned of the xingyiquan taught in that method as well as the baguazhang, a lot of stepping methods rely on committing the body weight forward momentarily before bringing the rear foot beneath it again while stepping towards or into the target to generate whole body power during the follow (aka scissor aka shadow) stepping. Those guys are some of the best fighters I've ever touched lots of power, lots of mobility, truly scary. I never thought of doing a xingyi step kind of like a taijji step until just now thinking about what you said. I don't think it would generate the same kind of power. Western wrestling which I did a little of when I was in grade school moves the body into position when doing takedowns often by commiting the body weight into the forward foot when shooting in (part of our exercise during practice was a kind of duck walking with long steps bringing the weight to the front foot and the rear leg resting on the knee with the leg half extended so we could develop the ability shoot in for the leg naturally and quickly). Boxing also relies on transferring the weight to the front foot to generate force while stepping sometimes and dropping the weight with the step sometimes (step down into the punch). With a complete and balanced transfer of weight (like chicken stepping practice from bagua and xingyi) one foot is always ready to move again as the step completes, yet the weight transfer happens during the actual step (sorry trying to use words, any gao yi zhong bagua video on youtube would probably demonstrate or take a look at luo de xiu or su dong chen video who are kind of the best teachers of that stuff- any will probably show what I am talking about using that kind of stepping ) with the weight, the balance and the body all arriving at the moment of contact. But stepping in and bringing the body forward over one's base so one is stepping into a "no tossing posture" even while committing to the point that one cannot back out until one has completed the step- that I suppose is what I am wondering your thoughts about. If I understand what you are saying, they are starting from a non-tossing position, then doing a kind of momentary tossing step that ends again in a not tossing position. Is that a bad idea? Do you think i misunderstand some principle of these other arts or do you think that wrestlers, boxers, xingyi and baguazhang people often misunderstand about tossing and they shouldn't move the way they do? I really respect you a lot and love your channel, and have really gotten a lot of value from it. Just wondering your thoughts about that kind of stepping which seems to be really common in bagua xingyi boxing and wrestling.

    This is an interesting topic. It appears that the type of balance you are talking about is a static balance. It reminds me of primitive 4-legged robots that had to keep 3 legs on the ground at all times. But dynamic balance is also within the human repertoire of motion. Actions like running, jumping, biking, require dynamic balance. So I'd think "always balanced, no tossing" is not the best and only way, but it depends on your objective. There must be tradeoffs to both. "No tossing" is good to maintain rooting against constant resistance. (Eg constant rooting to maintain pressure) Dynamic balance has less control but probably uses less energy because you recruit gravity and falling. (Eg running is to fall forward continuously, not to leap and jump continuously.)

    • @oikddojo
      @oikddojo 4 дня назад

      Learning not to toss in the beginning of your training is incredibly important. If you learn to move in balance than you should be able to move quickly and freely in combat. Whether your off balance in a fixed position or while moving. You are still off balance.

    • @webherring
      @webherring 4 дня назад

      @@oikddojo I think that when we jump or run where both feet are off the ground, we are tossing. We cannot change direction midflight. And yet many high level athletes move this way, such as in basketball or soccer. They readjust their balance when their feet hit the floor, and they can stop or change direction very quickly. Is juggling in balance? It is literally tossing but the juggler can control the objects very well. Rooting is an effective strategy but there can be other strategies with different tradeoffs. IMO. The problem with tossing which I think you are alluding to is... If I use the example of juggling, the ball that is in air is temporarily out of our control, so an opponent can swat it away. When we lose rooting, the opponent can swat us away.

    Many thanks for making this series and sharing your knowledge. I was fortunate to come across your channel yesterday and saw the first episode which I was quickly able to synthesize the information you shared. I had the dance to practice the concept of splitting and I can definitely see the difference in power generation as well as the brilliance of the idea. I haven’t had the pleasure in studying any martial arts officially yet this series will aid in building my foundation before officially learning a particular martial art. Fortunely your style of teaching is easy for me to absorb the information so I was able to perform the splitting with ease though that’s mainly because of my background in practicing muscle control so expressiving the concept was easy. A good way to test it out I found was trying to lift weights using the splitting method. Honestly it’s sad most of us never learned proper body mechanics which would’ve enabled us to have better health and functionality. Would love to learn from you in person one day yet for now I shall continue to learn as much as I can through the screen. Thank you very much for making this available 🙏🏿
